Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure (Teal Blue), a winged dragon rampant couped at the loins Argent.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Silver tripartite scroll inscribed OVER to dexter, THE at base and BEST to sinister, all in Black letters.

Symbolism
According to ancient legend, the dragons ruled the sky, the air, the earth, and the waters of the earth.  Thus, it symbolizes the units main mission of aerial reconnaissance and surveillance.  The dragons wings are given prominence in order to emphasize the function of flight.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 15th Aviation Battalion on 18 September 1963.  It was redesignated for the 15th Transportation Battalion on 19 August 1965.
